Based on requests from Saudi Aramco and other leading petrochemical companies in the region, a team of engineers from ESAB Welding & Cutting Products’ Process Centre in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, demonstrated that the pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) value of duplex stainless steel alloys may lead to a misleading prediction of pitting corrosion resistance in the as-welded material. ESAB research results, published a technical paper in the April 2020 issue of Saudi Journal of Engineering & Technology, conclude that in the event of an imbalance of d (delta) ferrite and austenite volume fraction, the chemical composition of the phases may be very different from that of the ...

ESAB Expands Family of Filler Metals for LNG Applications, Launches Shield-Bright Flux Cored Wire For 9% Nickel Steel
Annapolis Junction, Md. – ESAB Welding & Cutting Products has introduced Shield-Bright NiCrMo-3, a 625-type electrode for manual and automatic flux cored wide-weave welding of 9% nickel steel in the vertical-up (3G) position and using 75% argon/25% CO2 shielding gas.“We specifically developed Shield-Bright NiCrMo-3 for a U.S. LNG tank fabricator that had shifted from a 1/8 in. (3mm) vs. 5/32 in. (4 mm) root gap using a ceramic backer,” says David Hamilton, Director of Sales, Stoody, an ESAB brand. “Wider gaps are challenging for high-nickel wires because the puddle tends to be sluggish and have a high crown, but Shield-Bright NiCrMo-3creates an extremely flat bead profile with excellent ...
