ESAB Previews REBEL™ EMP 205ic AC/DC, World’s First All-Process, Fully-Integrated Portable Welder at FABTECH 2017

November 6, 2017

Florence, S.C. - ESAB Welding & Cutting Products today provided FABTECH 2017 Expo visitors with a preview of its Rebel EMP 205 AC/DC, the world's first true all-process, inverter-based welding system. Rebel EMP 205 AC/DC enables users to TIG weld with AC and DC outputs, MIG weld with solid wires (steel, stainless or aluminum), Flux-Cored weld with gas-shielded and self-shielded wires and Stick weld with a DC output. The rated duty cycle is 205 amps at 20 percent.

"For professional fabricators and tradesmen who want to weld all metals with all processes and use only a single unit, the ultimate welder has always been a multi-process CC/CV power source with an AC/DC TIG output. ESAB has delivered that innovation with the Rebel EMP 205 AC/DC by leveraging the platform of the Rebel franchise," says Doug Smith, Product Business Manager - Arc Equipment, ESAB.

Smith notes that previous all-process units required additional controls or accessories, or they sacrificed arc performance in one or more processes. ESAB invites FABTECH attendees to conduct their own evaluation. Visitor to booth B17074 can use the AC output to TIG weld aluminum and the DC output to TIG weld mild steel or stainless steel.

Rebel DNA

Smith notes that when designing the unit, "ESAB maintained all the features and benefits end-users love about Rebel EMP multiprocess welders while adding an AC output and high-frequency (HF) arc start capabilities, both of which are required for TIG welding aluminum. ESAB also incorporated essential controls for AC TIG welding, such as an adjustable AC output frequency (up to 400 Hz) and adjustable AC wave balance control (up to 90 percent EN)."

AC output frequency controls the shape of the arc cone and arc force, while wave balance controls the amount of cleaning action vs. penetration. HF, or non-contact, arc starts are required for aluminum and are desirable (and sometimes required) in applications where end-users especially want to prevent accidental contamination from the tungsten electrode. These include welding chrome-moly tubing in motorsports and experimental aircraft applications, as well as welding stainless steel tubing in dairy and food processing facilities.

Rebel EMP 205 AC/DC features include 120V to 230V primary power flexibility, compact portability (the unit weighs 50 lbs.), a TFT LCD operator interface, dual gas solenoid valves and the same rugged housing as other Rebel units. It also incorporates ESAB's unique sMIG ("smart MIG") function that enables users to begin MIG welding - with an extremely stable arc - just by setting metal thickness and wire diameter. Anticipated commercial availability is Q2 2018, with an approximate MSRP of $2,900.
