Friction Stir Welding - Quality in Depth

tmp image flex template

Cleaner, leaner, stronger

In contrast to conventional welding techniques, the FSW process requires no filler material, gas or other consumables - and consumes much less energy. Generating no harmful gases, no slag, no spatter and little sound, the process actively contributes to a better working environment, while simultaneously boosting productivity. Best of all, weld-strength quality is excellent.

FSW opens up whole new areas in welding technology. Rapid and high quality welds of aluminum alloys, as well as copper and magnesium - traditionally considered unweldable - are now possible.

Key Benefits

  • No joint preparation - degreasing only
  • High quality welds
    - Increased tensile strength
    - Outstanding fatigue properties
    - Corrosion resistance
  • Environment friendly
    - No arc, fumes or spatter
  • Low operational cost
    - No consumables and low energy costs
  • No post treatment
    - Low distortion and shrinkage

Applications

The FSW process has demonstrated its capabilities and been approved for joining aluminum and other metals. ESAB FSW technology is since 1996 in use across a wide industrial spectrum of applications:

  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • Railway
  • Transportation
  • Marine
  • Heat transfer
  • Nuclear
