When Kevin Hembre was deployed to Iraq, he had no idea that he would end up co-starring in a television show with Monster Garage’s Jesse James or that he would ultimately end up the owner of an ESAB Multimaster 260 welder. But fate can be a funny thing. Recruited at age 18, Kevin has dedicated 17 years of his life to the Army. When reviewing his options for job training, he chose the path of a metal worker and was trained by the Army in welding and auto body repair, which appealed to him because he “was a motorhead in high school.”

ESAB Supports Welding Competition
On May 9, the 2008 State Secondary Student Welding Competition, hosted by the Department of Welding Engineering Technology at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, boasted its largest participation ever, with 103 students and 29 instructors from 26 different schools taking part in the event. ESAB was proud to support this annual competition, donating Spoolarc MIG wire and Atom Arc 7018 stick electrodes for the competition, and ESAB-branded promotional giveaways for the students.

Mexican Athlete Sponsored |
Francisco "Paco" Serrano, a triathlete from Monterrey, Mexico, was sponsored by ESAB and qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Serrano qualified by finishing 25th at the 2008 Vancouver BG Triathlon World Championships held in Vancouver, Canada, last June. He finished the Vancouver event, which consists of swimming, cycling and running, with an overall time of 1:51:59 to become the only athlete representing Mexico in the 2008 Olympic triathlon. In Beijing, he finished in 44th place, with a time of 1:54:46.09, just over five minutes slower than the winning time. Congratulations, Paco!
ESAB Helps High School Students Become Entrepreneurs |
Students in the Metal Manufacturing class at South Western High School in Hanover, Pennsylvania, recently got a glimpse of the many aspects involved in manufacturing a product, with ESAB-donated equipment and filler metals playing a key role in their education. The students designed, produced and sold metal lamps as part of a project that taught them about product research, prototype design, lean manufacturing, automation, teamwork and outsourcing. ESAB was proud to provide the students with MIG equipment and filler metals, as well as an automated plasma cutting system.
