20 All-State® No. 616 Special Low Alloy Steel Electrode AC or DC Reverse Polarity (Electrode +) All Position General Characteristics All-State® No. 616 eliminates underbead cracking on high tensile and free machining steels which are usually high in sulphur. This electrode avoids the use of stainless steel electrodes in many applications, thus doing away with costly and time consuming operations. The specially formulated coating helps to produce a quiet arc with very little spatter loss. Specially designed for out-of-position welding. Weld deposits are easily cut with an oxygen/fuel torch. Typical Applications Joining high sulphur steels, low alloy steels, enamelling steels and cold rolled steels. Recommended for maintenance work where better physical properties than those yielded by mild steel electrodes are required. Qualities Tensile strength—up to 80,000 psi (56.26 kgs/mm2) Yield strength—up to 70,000 psi (49.23 kgs/mm2) Elongation in 2"—30 to 34% Procedures Clean weld area. Preheating is not required except on some highly hardenable steels to prevent hard spots at the fusion zone. Hold a short arc but do not whip as this may cause porosity. Stringer beads are recommended. Weave beads may be used but not more than two times the diameter of the electrode. When using the larger sizes of electrodes, a drag technique is suggested. Slag can be easily removed by chipping.
