13 Diameters and Recommended Amperages .030" (.8mm)—13-24 volts—60-170 amps .035" (.9mm)—15-26 volts—70-180 amps 3/64" (1.2mm)—20-29 volts—140-260 amps 1/16" (1.6mm)—25-30 volts—190-350 amps NOTE: Parameters based on flat position, groove joint, backing strip, and 100% Argon gas. Arc voltage must be increased for helium or helium-argon mixture. Identification All spooled wire is labeled with manufacturing lot number, spool number, and date of manufacture, and is then sealed in shrink wrapped plastic bags. TIG welding rod is embossed every 8 inches on every rod with the alloy identificaiton number. This prevents mistakes in rod selection and reduces stub loss. Packaging 1/16" (1.6mm), 3/32" (2.4mm) and 1/8" (3.2mm) x 36" (900mm) in 1-lb. (.45 kg) , 5-lb. (2.27 kg) and 10-lb. (4.54 kg) containers. .030" (.8mm), .035" (.9mm) and 3/64" (1.2mm) x 1-lb. (.45 kg) spool. .035" (.9mm), 3/64" (1.2mm) and 1/16" (1.6mm) x 16-Ib. (7.3 kg) spool. Shielding Gases Shielding gas selection is generally dictated by the thickness of the base metal. The general rule of thumb is: 100% Argon for up to 3/16" (4.8mm) base metal thickness or when welding dissimilar aluminum alloys. 50% Argon/50% Helium for over 3/16" (4.8mm) base metal thickness. 100% Helium is suggested for overhead welding.
